Seven organizations have received grants totaling $17,750 from the Irving and Gloria Schlossberg Family Fund. The Irving and Gloria Schlossberg Family Fund was primarily established to preserve and strengthen Jewish culture and Jewish institutions in Dutchess County.
Fall 2008 Grant Awards
Children's Media Project $2,500
Funds to support costs of editing videotaped footage to produce L'Chaim, a documentary featuring local youth interviewing local Holocaust survivors, that will address multigenerational trauma and recovery in the context of the Holocaust.
Community Hebrew School of Dutchess County $1,000
Over the year the Community Hebrew School will explore the different peoples of Israel through their unique customs, foods and geographic histories. Activities will include songs, performances, role-play, vocabulary, cooking, etc.
Community Hebrew School of Dutchess County $1,500
A Torah Scribe will come to the Community Hebrew School for a special presentation to talk about the connections between learning Hebrew today and the ancient traditions within Judaism.
Congregation Shir Chadash of the Hudson Valley $1,352
Healing the World with Song - A concert with Peter Yarrow. There will also be a discussion about Judaism, social action, and the world. Part of the appeal of the program is a recognition that we are our "brother's keepers", especially in hard financial times, and that we care about this community in which we live.
Jewish Community Center of Dutchess County $3,000
Funds to replace 20 year telephone system in an effort to offer better customer service and increase membership.
Jewish Family Services of Dutchess County $2,880
Funds will be used to purchase a computer, printer and office supplies; pay for space rental; marketing and advertising of program; and staff time for a Senior Answer Center.
Temple Beth-El $4,000
Funds to offer a series of distinct programs, one of which will feature best selling author Lucette Lagnado. The program will include a reading and discussion centered around Lagnado's memoir, The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit: My Family's Exodus from Old Cairo to the New World.
Vassar Temple $1,200
Jewish Music and Art is a series of artist-in-residence workshops that will be provided to 40 students in Grades 4-7 at Vassar Temple's Sunday morning Religious School. Two one-hour art workshops will be provided to the students on each of six Sundays.
Vassar Temple $318
Trip to The National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. The intergenerational trip is a culminating activity for teens and adults from Vassar Temple, other local congregations and those unaffiliated, who took Vassar Temple sponsored Yiddish courses during the past two years.
