2009 Taconic IPA Science Education Grant Winners
This fund was created by Taconic IPA, whose mission is to provide the premier healthcare delivery network in the greater Hudson Valley, optimizing the value of medical services while maximizing physician satisfaction. Grants from this fund are awarded to secondary school science teachers to expand students' learning opportunities in the sciences through the acquisition of classroom and laboratory science equipment. 2009 Grantees  2009 Taconic IPA Science Education Grant Winners
Amanda M. Ackers - Dutchess Day School
Purchase of six adapatable learning wind turbines and a windware data collector for the study of different energy topics in general and wind energy in particular. Gregg A. Farris - Poughkeepsie Middle School Purchase of microscopes to supplement the small number currently available in the school. Glen M. Morris - Rombout Middle School Genetic materials will be purchased to allow students to acquire hands on experiences with the transfer of genetic material and to enhance their understanding of genetics and what scientists do. Emily Price and Jacob A. Lawrence - Arlington High School Purchase of a personal solar telescope to make the study of the sun and solar power more real and relevant to students. Gwen E. Saylor - Poughkeepsie High School Three spectrometer apparatus will be purchased for use in chemistry and physics classess. This technology allows for detailed emissions analysis that can be projected via computer for class or lab group analysis. Jo L. Schaffel - The Alternative Program at the Circle of Courage Basic science equipment will be purchased for all grades at this school that serves at-risk, lower socio-economic level teens, to help prepare them from the NYS Intermediate Science exam and Science Regents exams. James P. Starr - Kingston High School Purchase of three data collection units to help analyze experiment results and expose students to more realistic laboratory equipment. Roger Weiss - Beacon High School Purchase of a vacuum pump to help demonstrate highly abstract chemistry concepts, such as boiling point, sublimation and gas laws. Bryan P. Woods - Poughkeepsie High School Purchase of three hot water baths and a micro centrifuge for expanded genetic study and investigations.
